The ruling class could only continue as they had in the past if ever-greater pressure was applied to the peasantry, replicating across the empire the excessive exploitation which had already ruined the Italian peasants. [...] There were increasing instances [...] of peasants abandoning land which provided them with no livelihood once they had paid rent and taxes. The state increasingly passed legislation binding peasants to the land or to particular landowners as ‘coloni’, effectively serfs. But such legal subjection gave them even less reason to support the empire against ‘barbarian’ incursions.
Chris Harman in "A People's History of the World" 1999

The consumption of the rich was more lavish and the superstructure of the state vaster than ever. A point was bound to be reached at which things simply could not go on as before. There was not the material base in production to sustain such vast undertakings.
Chris Harman in "A People's History of the World" 1999

Anyhooos,

Back to real ao nosso presente, folheamos agora o The Atlantic para sentidos do sem-sentido dos tempos.

That’s apt, because Amazon might be the best standard-bearer for the concept of an Evil Corporation.

Over the past week, Amazon has mounted an aggressive public-opinion campaign in what appears to be an effort to discredit its warehouse workers in Alabama, who are trying to unionize. Amazon News started maximizing provocation, or, in internet speak, shitposting. The directive to attack aggressively came from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos himself.

Amazon’s bravado [...] represents a departure from expected online corporate behavior. In a backwards way, and certainly unintentionally, Amazon’s weird behavior is liberating us from the affliction of building affable relationships with corporations. It’s a reminder that although companies have basically become people in our lives, those people might very well be assholes.

E uma caixinha web porque vcs sabem porquê :)

By 2010, everyone was online. Previously, companies could speak only through formal messages on billboards; by mail, radio, or television; or via media coverage of their actions. The web had shifted that control a bit, but websites were still mostly marketing and service portals. Social media and smartphones changed everything. They made corporate speech functionally identical to human speech.

Over the past century, companies have been transformed into private individuals, deserving protection from the state. The internet made corporations feel like people. It also allowed companies to behave like people.

The urban masses were equally incapable of taking the lead in a revolutionary reorganisation of society. They were even less central to production than the small peasants. The most impoverished were dependent on casual labour. Others were artisans in luxury trades, whose livelihoods depended on supplying the needs of the rich. There were many slaves in Rome. But their conditions were often more favourable than those in agriculture, and many could hope to join the high proportion of the capital’s population who were free if they were attentive enough to their owners.

Ah!

The United States is defined by the excesses of its ruling class. But why do a handful of people own so much land?
in "Bill Gates is the biggest private owner of farmland in the United States. Why?" 5 abr 2021

Why indeed?
