« welcome to the new frontier, the junction of internet culture and financial libertarianism »

in "We Won’t Need No Rocket To Fly Through Space – This Week’s Links" 19 mar 2021

According to a recent analysis cited by The New York Times, about 7,000 millionaires will emerge from the latest round of Silicon Valley initial public offerings.

Ó, a Humanidade...

Thus the collector’s impulse has finally found its way to the virtual realm. More than the art or the object or the virtual thing, possession is the point: the sense that you are buying something that is yours and yours alone.
in "A jpeg for $70m: welcome to the strange world of cryptocurrency art" 17 mar 2021

NFTs are a way for artists working in new technologies to make money in a space that has been historically difficult to monetise, (…) the latest in a series of blockchain-backed experiments around the authentication of property and digital art on the internet.
in "A jpeg for $70m: welcome to the strange world of cryptocurrency art" 17 mar 2021

Traduzindo...:

The whole ordeal is a fad for the rich, who are speculating with crypto on things no one needs or perhaps even really wants, possibly as a way to quickly flip the assets for more crypto.
in "A jpeg for $70m: welcome to the strange world of cryptocurrency art" 17 mar 2021

Agora explicado,

NFTs are essentially a multilevel marketing scheme that requires other people to buy in after you at a higher price. They’re title deeds for increasingly useless crap.
in "Trophy Homes and $2.5 Million Tweets: How the Idle Rich Spent Their Pandemic Year" 10 mar 2021

It’s like a “Certificate of Authenticity” that’s in Comic Sans, and misspelt.

When I buy an NFT, what do I get? You’re buying the key to a crypto-token. You’re not buying anything else. The art itself is not in the blockchain — the NFT is just a pointer to a piece of art on a website. Note that it’s only the token that’s non-fungible — the art it points to is on a website, under centralised control, and easily changeable. [...] The purpose of NFTs is to get you to give your money to crypto grifters. The only purpose the artists serve is as aspiring suckers to pump the concept of crypto — and, of course, to buy cryptocurrency to pay for “minting” NFTs.
in "NFTs: crypto grifters try to scam artists, again" 11 mar 2021

Beeple’s connection to digital speculation is not incidental.
in "Beeple Has Won. Here’s What We’ve Lost." 20 mar 2021

Metakovan, the mystery Beeple buyer is Vignesh Sundaresan, a crypto entrepreneur. Metakovan is also behind Singapore-based Metapurse, a crypto-based investment firm. Metapurse has taken Beeple’s multiple artworks, or NFTs, along with three virtual museums, and combined everything into a “massive bundle.” Would you like to invest in this wonderful package? You can. All you have to do is stock up on Metapurse’s new B20 token. What’s interesting is that Beeple, the creator of the artwork, is actually a business partner of Metakovan’s. He owns 2% of all the B20 tokens. I’m sure there is no conflict of interest here.
in "Metakovan, the mystery Beeple art buyer, and his NFT/DeFi scheme" 14 mar 2021

You can buy just about anything these days — even what you can’t actually own.

NFTs reflect a view of the world in which anything can be monetized, even if its value is entirely specious. [...] You could see where this might be headed: It’s the financialization of everything, with practically anything eligible to be tokenized, chopped up into tranches, converted into securities that intrepid day traders could buy and sell. Your life, rendered as a tradable market commodity.
in "Trophy Homes and $2.5 Million Tweets: How the Idle Rich Spent Their Pandemic Year" 10 mar 2021

With NFTs, we’ve come yet another step closer to fully digitizing our lives. Everything that can be digitized will be digitized. And that’s pretty much all you need to know, since you can pour anything of value into an NFT — even assets linked to the real world like houses and cars — and it will be worth whatever it is worth, which has always been whatever someone is willing to pay to acquire it.
in "Another Big Step Toward Digitizing Our Lives" 20 mar 2021
